Inspired by Boredom

When you are incredibly busy, you want nothing more than to take a break and have nothing to do for a while. When you have nothing to do however, you enjoy it for three days, and then want nothing more but to go back to your busy life of school and work. I kind of have a place I'm going with this, but don't know what it is yet. I'm just so bored right now that anything is better than nothing. Hence this post, a rant about nothing that says nothing. If you value your sanity I'd stop reading right now. I'm serious about that.

That was a joke...there is no more...bye.

What's the worst that could happen?

Why are most of the greatest people in most professions not recognized as such until they are dead? Artists in particular seem to have this fate, but it seems that it is only after you die that people even know what your greatest achievement is. Yes I realize the irony in that statement, but I meant to be conscious of it even existing, not to be conscious of it being your greatest work. Only those who also specialize in your field appreciate what a masterpiece you have created, and the world doesn't agree until you are no longer around to know about it. There really is only one profession that allows recognition in your lifetime, and that is crowd pleasing. I mean, no matter how bad you are at anything, if you can get enough people to say you are fantastic, everybody else on this rock will jump behind them to avoid being the outcast.

Look at the news, it is either death and destruction, political entropy, or celebrity gossip. The general public no longer cares about anything that forces them to think for more than five seconds. It's not that they are incapable of paying attention for longer than that, they simply do not care anymore. Our society is based solely upon making everything in life as easy as possible. Reading is acceptable only if it consists mostly of pictures, and does not require sentient thought to understand. In our quest to get everything faster and better than it was before, I shudder to think of what society is going to eventually degrade into. Perhaps the movie Idiocracy is not far off in its predictions. The only difference is that instead of Gatorade, the owners of MySpace will control the world. It is ironic that this same society that is so obsessed with having everything done for them is also so obsessed with dieting and the personal image. Naturally, we want those areas to be taken care of as quickly as possible, and by somebody else if we can as well, but it is still odd that we are pushing so hard towards never having to leave our homes again, and caring so much about what other people think of us.

People are taking less and less of an interest in everything that concerns them, willing to sacrifice any personal freedoms necessary to no longer have to make decisions for themselves. As a sad mark of humanity today, it seems that most people would prefer to have some controlling authority going so far as to control our jobs, education, and every other personal aspect of our lives, as long as it meant we didn't have to actually do anything. The average person would trade in their free speech for a button that does the dishes for us (so that we don't even have to take the time to load those pesky dishwashers). We would probably accept government robots that would keep watch over our homes and eradicate any political tension discovered through any means necessary if that same robot did all the housework so that we could sit on our butts all day and watch TV until we rot.

There is not much that I can do about that though. There are few things that anyone can do to stop this recent trend. Mob mentality rules in a country where we need warning labels not to hit ourselves in the heads with hammers, and thieves can win lawsuits for cutting themselves on a knife in the very house they were robbing. Obviously the justice system needs some work, but we are far too lazy to care about any of these things, because none of them affect us personally. If that thief had cut himself on a knife in your house and sued you for thousands, I am willing to bet that you would start to care a lot more about just how screwed up our society has become. What nobody seems to realize is that eventually this decay is going to catch up to us. The apathy of today is very likely to pass the point of no return before we will care enough to try and change it.

What I am really interested in however, is how this change in society and the mentality of the average person in America, the so-called "greatest country on earth," has on religion. Back in the old days, religion layed a much larger part in a persons life. When almost everybody was either a farmer or a shepard, if a person did not work hard at what they did, they would die. As such, when they prayed, if the things they prayed for were granted (whether by divine influence or not) they would live. If those prayers were not granted, they would die. As such, it would be much more important for them to try to appease a God if He existed, because a drought or a pack of wild animals sent by a divine being meant death. This increase in the rational of complete devotion was a double edged sword however. While being more likely to consider the devine and spiritual aspects of life, it was also easier to see why idolatry and an adherence to false religions would be so rampant.

If for example, a drought came, then it would be in the people's best interests to try and appease the almighty responsible as quickly as possible. After all, if they failed to do so soon enough, they would die. When the results of  dealing with the devine are so immediatly felt to such a strong degree, then it is more likely that the people would turn to other sources of deliverance sooner. It is easier to hold out against not getting a raise than it is against not eating. If, by some strange coincidence, their turn to a false god somehow also coresponded with the ending of the drought, then it would be only natural to continue trying to appease this false god. In their case the "answered" prayer of the false god saved their life, it did not simply lead to a bigger house. It stands to reason why these people would adhere to this new false god with a vehemence unknown in today's world.

As I have already said, today we are not as immediatly aware of the consequences of our answered prayers. They are no longer a matter of life or death, and as such we are not as interested in them as we used to be. In fact, we are so convinced that we are able to survive on our own steam. The constant struggle to have everything done for us has, ironically, destroyed the need for God to provide anything. We rely instead on other people, on machines, and on the constant assurances of those we place in authority above us. We figure that if something goes wrong, it can always be taken care of by human means. Unfortunately for us, in most aspects we are right. We can survive without any help from God. If there is a drought, we are able to produce enough crops to at least get by. There is no sense of immediacy to our needs in anything.

What we cannot do without God's help is fulfill the purpose we were created for. In this, the only way to salvation and everlasting life is with God. We are not dead yet, are not dying quite yet, and so most of us simply ignore that fact, because we are not personally affected by it just yet.

The Heart of Everything

So I am in one of the weirdest moods that I have been in in a long time. It's been quite a while since my last post, so I guess a quick update is in oder. I just finished my first semester at Biola, and it was freaking awesome. I love that place. I love it so much in fact, that while I never got homesick while there, I am now getting homesick being back in Folsom. I want to go back already. I am on the Biola tennis team, which is awesome, but I'm nursing a back injury to keep from playing too hard lately, so that kind of sucks.

As to my mood, well, that's probably a combination of the "homesickness," the lack of being able to play tennis, and the fact that I am reading all of my more somber and melancholy posts while listening to Within Temptation. They are an awesome band, but it's kind of a haunting music, and adds to the current semi-depression mood I'm in. I'm just more confused than ever about a lot of things, and it's starting to get to me.

I don't really have much of a reason for this post, so to top it off, I'll leave a few random quotes I've found lately that I think are very funny.

"I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time...I feel like I've forgotten this before!"

"More people protest the wearing of fur than leather, because it's easier to protest against rich women than biker gangs!"

Hey why not!

Hello all faithful readers. I know these sites are usually scams, but this one actually has on offer that costs no money to complete so I thought hey why not. So if anybody is feeling nice, they can click http://www.YourPS34free.com/index.php?ref=3850699 and help me out.

It's supposed to give me a free ps3 if I can get 10 people to complete 1 offer. Cool thing I found, the stamps.com offer is just a free trial. You can cancel immediatly after you sign up to avoid getting charged anything and it still counts as completing an offer. I saw this and figured...hey why not! I know, usually stupid sites, but I figure it can't hurt to try seeing as I'm not out any money if it doesn't work! Just make sure you remember your answers to your secret questions because you need those to log in and cancel, but if you just remember them, you can cancel immediatly and never be charged!

So again, http://www.YourPS34free.com/index.php?ref=3850699 and why not, it seems like a fair shot! Please?
